That time I got reincarnated as a slime

Yup. That's the name...

It has been some time since we last met. I was a little busy. Hence no newsletters during the past weeks. But here we are again with a new one. The shop is open again, and now you can have your fill of ramen.

That time I got reincarnated as a slime.
Yes. This is the actual title of the anime.
One of the best isekai anime out there!

You remember the isekai genre, right? In short, the protagonist gets transported to another world. Usually, this world is set in medieval times and has magic!

That time I got reincarnated as a slime is one of the best of this genre. And my favourite from this genre. Tied right up with Drifters (That's the story for another newsletter).

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (Tensei Shitara Suraimu Datta Ken, also short name TenSura) is a Japanese fantasy light novel series written by Fuse and illustrated by Mitz Vah. Light novel?

As the name suggests, it is a novel. But usually published as a series with a gap of 3 to 9 months. Light novels (LN) are commonly illustrated in a manga art style and are often adapted into manga and anime. Yes. LN is another source for anime.

"TenSura" has been adapted into a manga series, five spin-offs, and an anime television series produced by Eight Bit. The second season aired from January to September 2021, and an anime film was released in November 2022. The third season is set to air in 2024.

So what is it about? Into the magical world now…..

Satoru Mikami is a 37-year-old salaryman (a term used to describe white-collar workers in Japan). His life is monotonous. No adventure. No unexpected twists. Plain, old, and simple. And he doesn't have a girlfriend (Most isekai protagonists don’t - at least not on earth).

One day he meets up with his junior to catch up. And as fate would have it, an assailant with a knife pops out of nowhere. In an attempt to save his junior’s life, Satoru gets stabbed and dies….

Don't worry. Don't worry. This is how the hero gets to the world of magic. The running gag is that isekai protagonists gets hit by a truck. Then they get transported to the medieval-looking world with magic!

Regardless of the way they die, the common thing is that they almost always die in the first episode. There are others who gets simply transported as well.

Here Satoru dies. And guess what he gets reincarnated as. Yes. You guessed it from the title - as a slime.

Slimes are usually low-level monsters. They are those things that are easily killable. And yet the MC is a slime?

But he is no ordinary slime. He soon finds out that he has the ability called predator. It lets him eat anything and everything. On top of that, he can imitate the power of the other monsters he consumes. Seems a little overpowered, right? It sure is!

He makes his way around the cave where he was reincarnated and meets up with a dragon named Veldora. Veldora bestows the name Rimuru upon the slime.

Veldora is trapped in the cave with an eternal imprisonment spell. Rimuru promises to break Veldora out. He consumes Veldora along with the prison and stores it in his stomach. Overpowered MC - remember?

And Rimuru sets off into the world of sword and sorcery.

The interesting thing about this anime is that it is told from the point of view of monsters.

Usually, in an isekai anime, the hero/heroine is summoned to get rid of the monsters or slay the demon king. But here, the MC (main character) himself is a monster.

Rimuru goes on to establish a monster alliance. Yup. He builds a village for monsters which soon grows into a prosperous settlement rivaling even the developed nations there.

Monsters such as goblins, dire wolves, orcs, ogres, etc, are shown to be more humane than the humans in the anime.

You just can’t help yourself from falling in love with these monsters and their overpowered leader Rimuru Tempest.

There is a lot of stuff to laugh at in this anime. It's comedy gold. Especially the interaction between Rimuru and his devout followers. The followers compete among themselves to see who is more useful to Rimuru.

The show is set in a light-hearted manner. But it does get dark at times.

The fights are choreographed nicely. There is a lot of bloodshed at times. But Rimuru overpowers everything and comes out on top each time.

And the happiest news about this anime is that it is available for free on YouTube. Rejoice those who don't have a premium subscription to streaming services. Who needs Netflix anyway. (*cries in no money*)

Just install a youtube ad block extension from the Chrome webstore (if you are using Google chrome on pc) and enjoy the show without any ads.

Check out the anime on Youtube!!
It's really fun to watch.
You won't regret spending time with Rimuru and The Great Forest Jura Alliance.

So that's it for this week.
Have a good week ahead.
Itadakimasu!
